Description
From a review - Set in 16th-century Italy. The main character is a common soldier who has risen and now is determined to make a career as a courtier type among the high-up backstabbing politicians. The first third or so of the book I thought was a great demonstration of how much adrenaline a book can have with how little drawing of weapons. Later on there are more battle scenes and stereotyped villains (in this case, the war going on is between France and Spain over the various Italian micro-states; the bad guys are the Spanish and their allies) and the conflict between honor and ambition in the protagonist's mind, which is very much there from the beginning, plays out in a more conventional way.
